June is a month for lovers. Whether it’s Danny and Sandy’s weird, masochistic romance from Grease or any number of whirlwind rendezvous (in song or out) on the beach, summer lovin’ happens fast. Lots of people get married in the summer—and both my parents’ and my own anniversaries are this month. Why shouldn’t everyone get wrapped up in the romance of June?
Here are just a few ways to make June a bit more romantic.
Hit the drive-in. All clichés aside, it’s one of the best and cheapest places to spend a date during the summer months. It’s usually cool enough by the time the sun goes down so you can enjoy the film, and you usually pay a small price for a double feature. Drive-ins also usually feature great diner-type food, such as root beer floats and burgers, at an affordable cost.
Print out some lovely messages and spread them around. Kind Over Matter has some of my favorites, such as these “You are so Beautiful” and “You Shine” messages. You can search their site for dozens of other sweet printables, or create your own!
Hit a summer concert. It doesn’t have to be a big one (though both Bon Jovi and U2 are really making their rounds this year); you could even go to a free local concert at a bar or the park. Lots of locations are hosting free concerts during the summer, and they’re not bad. At least you’ll get some live music to dance to! (Note to those in love with children: If your kids aren’t used to live music or they’re young, you’ll definitely want a sitter! Our five-year-old did not like the live band we took her to and kept asking for “earmuffs.” Needless to say, we did not stay long!
Go to a fair, carnival, or other festival. Odds are that there will be one in your area soon! Contact your local chamber of commerce for details, or search for local ones online. This is a time to make some really romantic memories, like kissing on the ferris wheel or winning a stuffed animal for your loved one. Some fairs even offer engraving booths where you can get matching bracelets or other trinkets; one year my husband and I did that and it was incredibly sweet. Don’t play those games where you win live animals, though, unless you are truly prepared to take care of it.
Hit summer kiddie deals. Even if you don’t have kids, you can’t miss the kiddie deals—such as child-priced tickets to Six Flags on Coke cans, or free movies showing at theaters on select dates throughout the summer months. Pool passes, museum admissions, ice cream truck visits, and plenty of other kiddie deals are around if you look for them, so take advantage of them when you can.
Make a summer bucket list to do together. Include romantic destinations (even if it’s just the park), things you’ve always wanted to try (salsa dancing?), and eateries you’ve always been meaning to visit as a couple.
